Open letter to the Kentucky Senate (update)

February 13, 2009

UPDATE — too little, too late – Looks like it’s going to be an uphill battle for Kentucky’s alcohol businesses.

In support of fellow bloggers and retailers in the area fighting what from what every angle appears to be short-sighted band-aid sin-tax, I’d urge you to write  letters Elizabeth Tori, a key-decision maker to VOTE NO on HB144. Below is mine.

I implore you to vote no on HB 144!

This bill chokes the only knight that can slay the deficit dragon!

It is PREPOSTEROUS to increase taxes on one of the few industries that has a fighting chance of actually STIMULATING the economy on local-to-state (distilleries, wineries, breweries and retailers) national (distributors, retailers) and international (exporters) levels.

The affects of this increase have a global impact. It would be shortsighted to treat the “symptom” (the deficit) by what seems to be a convenient sin-tax.

Perhaps treating the “cause” could actually bring prosperity to the state. A tax lock or DECREASE could grow sales, bring in new consumers, commerce, and industry to the state and grow the actual BASE = a long term win.

Thank You.
